Facebook Ads Budget: How Much Should A Small Business Spend?

Start With What You Can Afford To Learn

There is no universal Facebook ads budget for a small business. The sensible amount depends on your margins, audience, objective and ability to handle enquiries. A budget copied from another advertiser tells you little if their customer value and sales process differ from yours.

Set a test amount you can afford to lose without relying on immediate sales. Decide what the test needs to reveal, such as whether a particular service attracts suitable local enquiries. Advertising is uncertain, so avoid building essential cash-flow commitments around an unproven campaign.

Work Backwards From Contribution

Use contribution after delivering the work, not simply turnover, when considering acquisition costs. Allow for overheads, uncertainty and the profit you need to retain. If customers may return, avoid assuming future purchases until your own evidence supports that expectation.

Here is a purely hypothetical calculation, not a benchmark or recommended spend. Suppose a completed job contributes £300 after direct delivery costs, and the business chooses an advertising acquisition ceiling of £90. If one in three qualified enquiries becomes a paid job, the corresponding advertising cost ceiling is £30 per qualified enquiry.

That calculation depends on the assumptions being true. Lower qualification or booking rates change the result. Management, creative production, landing-page work and other costs must also fit the overall acquisition allowance; they do not disappear because Meta reports an attractive lead cost.

Define A Small, Answerable Test

Choose one service, one meaningful audience and an objective aligned with the action you want. Avoid dividing a modest budget across many near-identical ad sets. Too much fragmentation can leave you unable to distinguish a weak offer from insufficient evidence.

Prepare a relevant destination and a monitored response route before launch. For a hypothetical local installer, the test might ask whether homeowners in the actual service area request assessments for one installation type. It should not try to measure awareness, recruitment and sales simultaneously.

  • Set a maximum affordable test spend.
  • Define a qualified enquiry before launch.
  • Record the review date and stopping conditions.
  • Include creative and setup costs in the plan.

Understand Meta’s Budget Controls

A daily budget is an average spending target, not necessarily a hard ceiling for each calendar day. Meta can vary delivery across days. Check the current spending rules shown in your account rather than assuming the number entered guarantees identical daily charges.

A lifetime budget allocates an amount across a defined period. Campaign and ad-set budget options control where the money is managed; they do not guarantee results. Review schedules, account controls and billing settings before publishing.

Keep a record of approved limits and who can change them. Pausing ads stops future delivery once the pause takes effect, but charges already incurred can still be billed. A later bill is not necessarily evidence that the campaign restarted.

Judge Qualified Demand, Not Cheap Form Fills

Connect each enquiry to its outcome where practical. Record duplicates, unsuitable locations, invalid contact details, quotes and paid jobs. A campaign generating inexpensive but irrelevant submissions may be worse than one generating fewer suitable conversations.

Use lawful tracking and obtain consent where required for advertising cookies or similar technologies. A server-side setup is not an automatic exemption from privacy duties. Explain relevant processing and keep lead-form questions proportionate to the initial decision.

Increase Spend Only After Checking The Bottleneck

If suitable enquiries arrive but bookings do not, investigate response handling and the offer before buying more traffic. If delivery is limited or the audience is unsuitable, review campaign setup. Increase spend cautiously only when observed economics and capacity support the decision; scaling can change costs and lead quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum that guarantees results?

No. Platform delivery requirements are not a guarantee of useful enquiries or sales. Use your own affordable test limit.

Should I boost a post instead?

A boost may suit a simple promotion, but choose the setup that supports your objective, controls and measurement needs.
